Small Plane Crashes Near Miami Executive Airport

A small plane crashed on Sunday near Miami Executive Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

MIAMI, FL β€” A small plane crashed after declaring an emergency near Miami Executive Airport on Sunday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. An agency spokeswoman told Patch that the crash involved a Piper PA 60 aircraft. She said that only one person was aboard the aircraft but could not confirm news reports that one person was killed.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. just west of Miami Executive Airport.

"The pilot departed from Miami Executive and was returning to the airport after declaring an emergency," explained Arlene Salac of the FAA.

Miami-Dade police told Local 10 that one person was killed in the crash.

Salac said that the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause of the accident.

Miami Executive Airport is located at 12800 SW 145th Avenue. It had previously been called Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport. Miami Executive is one of the busiest general aviation airports in Florida, serving corporate, recreational, flight training, and governmental agency activities, according to airport officials, who said that the facility is considered a reliever airport for Miami International Airport.
