Isaac, the 2012 RNC and the Spanish Armada

The historic event of 1588 – involving a super power, politics and an act of Mother Nature – has more in common with the upcoming GOP convention than many might think.

With Hurricane Isaac due to make landfall here in Tampa sometime on Sunday or Monday, at the exact time of the commencement of the Republican Convention, I can't help but think about the the storms during the summer of 1588 that led to the defeat of the over-zealous Spanish Armada, which had attempted to overthrow England.

It is important to say that as a resident of Tampa Bay and, well, a human being, I dread the thought of the potential threat to life and property of others. I worry especially for the homeless and downtrodden who have been evicted from the area surrounding the convention site, on which billions have been spent on creating this "perfect venue."

I felt I had to share, as a retired teacher of Spanish, the hugely ironic correlation between the historic event, perhaps forgotten by many Americans, and the act of Mother Nature that just might take the wind out of the Republicans' sails.

(For more info, google "the Spanish Armada 1588," but be cautious about the reliability of the source; and for another giggle, search the origin of the name Isaac.)
