City to Vote on Swigwam Outdoor Seating

The St. Pete Beach City Commission will be deciding the fate of the outdoor seating at the Swigwam on June 26.

The Swigwam is one of beach bars favored by many beachgoers, but it may be changing shortly.

The St. Pete Beach City Commission will be voting on whether the Swigwam can use the sidewalk on Corey Avenue at their next meeting on June 26, according to an article from the Gulfport Gabber.

Rob Williams, owner of the Swigwam, attended the last city commission on June 12 to discuss the upcoming car show, which was on the agenda for the meeting.

Before the topic was reached District One City Commissioner, Lorraine Huhn said that she thought the outdoor use of the sidewalk by the Swigwam posed a public safety issue. The issue of sidewalk use was nowhere on the proposed agenda.

The Swigwam, which was formerly located right on the beach, is located in a smoke-free building and customers must go outside to smoke.

Mayor McFarlin pointed out that the issue was brought up before, but he supports revoking the outdoor permissions of the Swigwam, as it exposes children to a bar atmosphere.

Williams stated he was willing to compromise and only allow patrons outside after 7 p.m., but stated smokers will still need to go out during the day.

The Swigwam Facebook page has issued out a call for people to attend the next meeting on June 26th and states that the issue is continued harrasment from local governement officials. The Facebook statement follows.

"Here we go again. Last night at the SPB Commission meeting, our district representative, Loraine Huhn, offered up the idea of removing the privilege for Swigwam patrons to have a drink in front of the bar, on the sidewalk. She stated "public safety" as the reason. This is a continuation of harassment from certain members of our local government as well as certain merchants and FORMER merchants from Corey Avenue. Two weeks from now the Swigwam will once again fight for YOUR right to enjoy the sidewalk peacefully. We have been pro-active in addressing concerns, posting signs, and keeping a watchful eye. Your support on this matter is greatly appreciated. Tuesday night, June 26th is the next meeting at City Hall, 6pm. THANK YOU !!"
