Coast Lines: Fancy Bacon at Beachwood BBQ

Bacon as an appetizer. It doesn't get much better.

My wife, Candy, and I don’t go out to eat that often. Normally, she’ll whip up an amazing dish that she claims is nothing but will taste heavenly.

I’m truly spoiled by her cooking, so eating out is not only a rarity due to time, but I’d also much rather enjoy the meals made for me at home.

On those occasions that she doesn’t feel like cooking because she’s had a long day, we’re left with two options. We can either eat out or try to stomach whatever I may cook. Don’t get me wrong. I can cook an amazing breakfast, but everything else kind of goes into the danger zone. I have burned popcorn into flames, if that tells you anything.

When faced with the option last week of trying to eat the inedible or going out, we decided very quickly to hit the beach and find a restaurant.

We decided to hit up the . It was a compromise for us because of my love of barbeque and she wanted a steak.

Instantly, I was amazed by the décor of the restaurant and the friendliness of the servers. Candy and I have had a lot of bad experiences in restaurants, so we tend to be cautious. Thankfully, there was nothing to worry about at Beachwood.

When we got our menus, I immediately decided to get some ribs while Candy got a steak. When we checked out the appetizers, my heart nearly skipped a beat.

They offered an appetizer called the bacon trio that had three different types of bacon. As a breakfast aficionado, I couldn’t resist ordering it. I had never before heard of bacon as an appetizer and had to try it.

Thankfully, the bacon came quickly and my mouth started to water. These weren’t the normal thin and crispy pieces bacon. These were thick, meaty strip slathered in various barbeque sauces.

Candy and I decided to cut the bacon up into small pieces to truly appreciate the flavor of each sauce. Normally, I’d just grab a hunk of bacon and gobble it down, but this was fancy bacon.

With the bacon completely devoured, our steak and ribs came shortly later. While the ribs were delicious, and the steak was mouthwatering (it was probably the best steak I’ve tried in a restaurant), the bacon is what stays in my thoughts.

I don’t know why I’ve never thought of using bacon as an appetizer before, but I assure you that I’m looking up barbeque sauce recipes so I can give my own bacon a tangy, and sophisticated, kick.
