Five Ways to Beat the Heat

Here are some activities to keep you cool as the heat index rises.

With the heat index hitting over 100 degrees, it’s time to figure out good ways to cool off. Luckily, there are many unique and fun ways to beat the heat out at the beaches.

  1. Hit the Beach: Living near the beach has its perks. It’s easy to go down to the shore and jump in the cool ocean water. Don’t plan on doing to much sunbathing in this type of heat. Also, remember to bring a tube of sunscreen so your skin is the shad of cooked lobster.

  • Get an ice cream cone: Days like these are made for ice cream. There’s something about getting a cone while it’s hot out that makes it taste so much better. Once you find which shop you want to go to, you get to make the difficult, and delicious, decision of which flavor to get.

  • Settle down with a book: There’s nothing quite like settling down with a book on a hot day indoors. Whether it’s a thrilling mystery novel or an enchanting romance, reading can transport your mind to a whole new world. Especially if you’re reading something with a cooler setting, like “The Shining” or other snowy books. If you need to find a good book, check out .

  • Break out the squirt guns: Who says squirt guns are just for kids? Days like these are the best times to get together some friends for an all out squirt gun war. A fun way to do it is to split up into teams and have a base for each team that allows access for refilling and a stockpile of water balloons. In this type of heat, even if you're losing, you're winning! If you need to gear up, there are many beach shops that have a good selection of decently priced water-based armaments.

  • Plan a lazy lunch out: You’ve got to eat, no matter how hot it is. Why not pack up a few sandwiches and sodas in a cooler and hit up one of the parks in the area to beat the heat. Many of the parks in the area have covered picnic tables to keep you in the shade while you eat.
