Local Hangouts: The Red Lion Pub
The Red Lion has a casual atmosphere one would expect on the beach and offers good deals at night to keep the place busy with many residents.
The Red Lion Pub has been open for about 30 years. Located right across from the beach, it’s a popular spot for locals. Four days a week, Heather Alles tends the bar. During the day, she says, it’s mostly regulars. She can greet most people who walk in by name and knows many of their drinks.
Red Lion is open 365 days a year from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. They even have a full breakfast menu. There’s a different special every night of the week. On Tuesday you can get wings for $0.35 a piece, which makes it one of their busiest nights. Other nights offer all-you-can-eat crab legs, ribs or grouper, or half price pizza.
Alee Al-Raee has been visiting the Red Lion regularly for years. “The bar has that ‘beach bar’ feeling,” he says. He remarked that it’s one of the only bars around that serves Magners on tap. “I have made special trips and planned nights around going there just for that reason,” he added.
The British themed bar has 15 other beers on tap. There’s also pool and foosball tables, steel tip darts and silver strike bowling. They have the NFL ticket and play soccer games on the new flat screen T.V. Every year they throw Halloween and Christmas parties, which a lot of locals consider a tradition.
The interior of the bar is full of dark wood furniture and red lion decorations. If you’re wanting to sit outside, there’s also a large patio where you can bring your dog. Some afternoons, one regular customer even brings her white cockatoo and leashes it on the porch while she goes in for a drink.
Alles recommended one custom drink above the rest: The Tidal Wave. Al-Raee agreed. ”Everyone has to try The Tidal Wave. I have had it, but it’s been a while. You only have to get it once for it to leave a lasting impression,” he grinned.
