Madeira Beach 9/11 Memorial Design Shown

Madeira Beach's 9/11 Memorial design was shown publicly at the city commission on May 24, 2011.

The design for Madeira Beach’s 9/11 memorial was shown to the city commission and community May 24th.

The monument, which will incorporate a steel beam from the World Trade Center, is scheduled to built at Causeway Park by the water.

Interim City Manager Bill Mallory introduced some of the people working on the monument, including two architecture students from the University of South Florida.

“We’ve reached the point where we would like to show the design to the city commission and the community,” Mallory said.

The design is being made with the waterfront in mind and has solid and translucent walls to use as reflecting walls, said Gregory Osborne, an architecture student at USF working on the project.

The base floor plan of the monument is based on the Pentagon but the project is taking from all parts of the 9/11 tragedy, Osborne said.

“With spacing and size, everything has something to do with 9/11,” Osborne said.

The monument is being made with the idea of children being born with no idea of 9/11 in mind, Osborne said.

“We want it to be kind of a hands-on museum. If there was a child born after the events, they could walk around and learn about what happened,” Osborne said.

The design is also featuring the beam from the World Trade Center prominently with seating in front of it, Osborn said. By the beam will be panels with the numbers of each plane lost on 9/11.

The design received applause from the members of the city commission and was liked. The design will be officially voted on in an upcoming city commission meeting.
