Meet an Artist: Robin Borland

Home grown Robin Borland has led a dynamic life of art and politics, and has no end in sight.

Painter, business owner, mom, political aide: Robin Borland has worn many hats. She was born locally at Morton Plant hospital and graduated from University of South Florida with her degree in Fine Art.

She had a studio for awhile before she went into politics. “I was commissioner for the city of Safety Harbor,” she explained. “And then I worked for Congressman Bilrakis for a year.” After she got out of politics she went back to art primarily, but stays politically active. She currently serves on the Congressman’s Advisory Board.

Now Borland teaches art privately and at The Beach Art Center in Indian Rocks, as well as painting commission pieces and holding Paint Your Glass Off parties. She hopes to continue teaching at The Beach Art Center. “I like it here because it’s not a pretentious art center. The people are very friendly,” she said.

“I think every artist goes through a weird place of what’s popular out there and what people are pushing in the galleries and I had to really come into my own and decide I’m just going to paint what I want to paint,” Borland shared. “I’ve been painting a lot lately and I just love it.”

She describes her work as contemporary expressionism. “I like to paint people doing their thing just in every day life,” she explained.
