Recycling Plan Coming to County Beaches

A new recycling program will bring easy recycling for aluminum and plastic to beach access points.

People on the beaches in Pinellas county will soon have an easy way to recycle while spending a day out on the water.

The Gulf Beaches Recycling Program will be placing blue recycling containers near the trashcans on the beach and in beach access parking lots.

According to the Pinellas county utilities, the plan is being implemented in two phases. Phase one includes beaches that will have the containers placed by early July. Phase two beaches will have the blue containers set up by late September. In total, 350 containers are expected to be on the beaches by the end.

The plan to implement the recycling program came from information gathered in a test of the program on St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Redington Shores, according to the Pinellas county utilities. The test found that 99 percent of people on the beach would recycle if they had the ability to do so on the beach.

The recycling bins are only to be used for aluminum and plastic. Because glass bottles are not allowed on the beaches, they weren’t included.
