Longtime Customer Opens Rick's Reef, Celebrates One Year Open

Rick's Reef has been open and thriving for one year. Patch caught up with General Manager Don Goodwin to learn more about the local spot.

Aug 5 marked the one-year anniversary for Rick’s Reef, a popular bar and grille located on Gulf Blvd. in St. Pete Beach.

Rick’s celebrated the milestone with an anniversary party.

“We actually did a grand opening and anniversary party in one because we never had one when we opened” said General Manager Don Goodwin.

Rick’s Reef was previously known as The Reef under different ownership. When The Reef closed, longtime customer Richard Myers decided it take it over and remodel.

The result has been ‘very popular in the last year’ said Goodwin.

The menu may be the most interesting part of Rick’s Reef and not just the contents inside. On the tables at each place setting sits a two-page newspaper with articles and photographs detailing the restaurant’s history. The newspaper also serves as Rick’s menu.

Rick’s Reef offers seafood and beach bar style fare with everything made fresh to order.

“We don’t have any microwaves in our restaurant which is interesting because you’re hard to find a place without a microwave these days” Goodwin said.

Popular menu items include the Reef shrimp, Mac & Cheese, burgers and Mahi that is flown in fresh two to three times a week.

Coming soon to Rick’s is happy hour Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Currently Rick’s opens at 11 but hours will be extending soon.
