Sand Key Sewer Break Could Cause Delays on Gulf Boulevard

The main sewer line for Sand Key broke Tuesday afternoon. Work to repair the line will affect Gulf Boulevard near the Sand Key Bridge for several days, according to officials.

The main sewer line on Gulf Boulevard at Sand Key ruptured on Tuesday afternoon, causing traffic delays as workers repaired the damage.

City crews are working on an emergency repair to reroute the line, which could include rerouting sewage to a nearby lift station or manhole. They also will work to restore the main and roadway, which could take several days, according to city officials.

The line broke about three-quarters of a mile south of the Sand Key Bridge.

Although the road is now open, the city expects traffic to be impacted for several days as workers excavate the area and repair the break.

"The biggest impact is on northbound traffic. Southbound traffic will have no effect," said Heather Parsons, a city spokeswoman.

A Utilities Department worker who was on site said a backhoe would have to be brought in to facilitate the excavating, which could lead to the traffic delays.

The break occurred in front of the Bayside Gardens condo complex at 1301 Gulf Blvd.

Detour signs and message boards will be set up before dark, and the turn lane is currently being used to reroute traffic, according to the city.

It is unclear how long the repair will take, or what caused the rupture.
