Seaside Spirits: The Cigar Republic

Relax with a drink and cigar at this bar hidden away on the beach.

This place is a hidden gem, tucked away in a shopping center just east of Gulf & 107th. It’s not a typical beach drinkery, which is one reason it merits attention. Here are five other reasons to check this place out.

1)    The beer. Cigar Republic is one of the few watering holes on the beach that consistently offers a great selection of domestic microbrews and hard-to-find imports. Notables include Victory’s potent Golden Monkey Ale (this reporter’s personal favorite), and much more. The wine list is even more extensive.

2)    The stogies. Fans of a fine cigar will adore this place. The Republic offers dozens of varieties, and even its own blend (rolled in Nicaragua, which owner Joel Vasquez says ensures consistency).

3)    The air. Not a fan of cigar smoke? Neither is this reporter, but there is plenty of outdoor seating here, so cigar aficionados can have their stogie and smoke it, too; even if their companions aren’t big fans of smoke.

4)    The buzz. Designated drivers and non-drinking cigar lovers should appreciate the selection of espresso, cappuccino, and lattes offered here.

5)    The atmosphere. The aesthetic here is great. Miniature tiffany chandeliers hang over the bar, and the décor gives the place a kind of a gecko-chic feel. The people you’ll meet here, and the conversations you’ll have make it unforgettable. Vasquez and his staff are not only extremely friendly, but also up for a good conversation. The clientele seem generally to be the same way.
