Seaside Spirits: The Undertow

This beachfront drinkery is a default destination for locals and visitors alike.

Here are five reasons why makes our inaugural Bar of the Week feature.

1) The view: Whether you choose the ground level brick patio or the upstairs deck, you’ll always be able to take in a lovely beach panoroma. On weekend days, this place makes for some excellent people watching. On clear nights, grab a beverage of your choice and do a little stargazing in the sand that skirts the property.

2) The beer: We realize that beer isn’t for everyone, but those who appreciate quality brews – those who can tell you the difference between and India Pale Ale and a Belgian White – will really dig this place. Check out the bar on the north side of the property – it has an entire wall od bottled imports and microbrews.

3) The crowd: We alluded to this before, but, depending on the time of day you go, you’ll see a good mix of spring breakers, bikers, tourists, and locals. On any given Saturday you’ll probably meet at least one crowd of bachelorette or stag partiers.

4) The music: On the nights when there’s live music, the music is good. Some Wednesday’s they’ll have jazz, and there’s good rock and roll some weekends. The juke box is always a good option as well – what’s on it is better than most, plus you can download almost anything that’s not.

5) The river: In the open-air bar closest to the beach, you should probably look before you put your drink down – carved into the rock bar top is a little waterway. Sometimes you’ll spot patrons racing plastic shot glasses around it (yes, the water actually flows, and in a loop around the bar). Just, please, don’t drink the water.
