Talkback: Your Favorite Letters

With multiple post offfice locations closing, we ask you to share your favorite pieces of mail.

The United States Post Office has announced the possible closure of 3,600 post offices.

With e-mail becoming more and more important in day-to-day life, letters have become less and less frequent. It has become a rarity to receive a letter in the mail that isn’t an advertisement or a bill that you have to pay.

We at Patch want to know what the best letter you’ve ever received or sent was. Was it an emotional letter for someone you love or just a note saying hello that brightened up your day. If it was a letter you sent, what made it so special and what was the reason you sent it. You don’t have to tell us both but feel free to if you feel so inspired. Whatever the letter was, we want to know.

Let us know your stories in the comments, on Facebook or be slightly ironic and e-mail me. If you happen to see me out and about, feel free to just tell me in person as well. We’d like to have all the submissions by Sunday night.

To start off, the best piece of mail I received was when I was in Basic Training in the Army. I had just gone through a horrible day. I had fallen from a higher location and shattered one of my teeth.

Not only was I in pain, but also I was depressed for not doing as good as my squadmates. When we finally got back to the barracks, the drill sergeants performed mail call and I heard my name shouted out. It was then that I received an intricately designed envelope.

My sister had sent me a letter made from paper she made herself and designed it with a piece of sheet music she found. The letter just said that she cared about me and that she was wishing me the best, but the amount of time she put into it, really touched me and made me feel much better.

The best piece of mail I sent was the invitation to my wedding. My wife and I had a themed wedding that consisted an apocalyptic 1940’s atmosphere. To get this across in the card, I designed a silhouette of a man and woman embracing in a mushroom cloud, with butterflies around them.

My wife took the completed designs, pasted them onto cards, soaked them in tea for half a day and then we burned the edges of the card together. Overall, I think the cards came out looking like something that would fit in our wedding.

What made it so important was the fact that we worked on it together and we were in sync through the whole creation process. Not only was it fun, but also it reaffirmed that this was the woman I wanted to spend my life with.

While your examples don’t have to be as long, we do want them by Sunday night so we can post the stories on the site on Monday
