Where do Firework Colors Come From?
Are you checking out fireworks tonight? Now you can find out why each color is the way it is!
When you go out tonight to enjoy the fireworks, you're bound to see a beautiful array of colors splash across the sky. Have you ever wondered where the colors come from though?
The Works, a museum in Bloomington, Minn made a handy chart of the different colors you may see tonight and what chemical compounds make the fireworks that special hue.
- Electric White: White-hot metal flakes
- Orange: Calcium salts
- Bright Red: Strontium Carbonate
- Turquoise:Copper Chloride
- Purple: Strontium (red) & Copper (blue)
- Silver Sparkle: Burning Aluminum or Magnesium flakes
- Green: Barium Chloride
- Gold: Glowing Iron or Charcoal powder
- Yellow: Sodium Chloride
