Sports run deep in Plant City, and Plant City High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Raider uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Plant City High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.


Parker Messick – Florida’s Mr. Baseball Turned Guardians Prospect

A standout at Plant City High School, Parker Messick earned the prestigious title of Florida Mr. Baseball before taking his talents to Florida State. There, the lefty pitcher was named ACC Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. Drafted in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Guardians, Messick is now climbing the ranks in the minor leagues and remains one of the organization’s most promising young arms. Emily Fry – Versatile Volleyball Standout

At 5'11", Emily Fry was a key player for Plant City High School’s varsity volleyball team, serving as both outside and middle hitter. A three-time club athlete, she also competed in beach volleyball tournaments and track. Her goal-oriented mindset and athletic versatility helped her earn interest from collegiate programs while she pursued a degree in graphic design. (Source: NCSA Sports)

Kenny Rogers – World Series Champ & Perfect Game Pitcher

A 1982 graduate of Plant City High, Kenny Rogers didn’t join the baseball team until his senior year, but went on to pitch a perfect game in the majors and win a World Series with the Yankees. Known as "The Gambler," Rogers played 20 MLB seasons with six teams, earned five Gold Gloves, and appeared in two World Series. (Sources: MLB.com, ESPN, SABR)


Johni Broome – SEC Star & County Player Of The Year

After beginning his high school basketball career at Plant City High, Johni Broome transferred to Tampa Catholic and earned Hillsborough County Player of the Year honors. He broke out at Morehead State with conference honors and later transferred to Auburn, where he became a dominant force in the SEC. Clay Roberts – Pro Soccer Player & Championship Coach

Plant City High alum Clay Roberts has built an impressive coaching career after playing professionally for the Charlotte Eagles and winning a title with the Philadelphia KiXX. As head coach of Southeastern University and the Florida Tropics indoor team, Roberts has twice been named Coach of the Year in both the Sun Conference and Major Arena Soccer League.
