📰 News we're reading

• Florida city poised to return $24 million to property owners (tcpalm.com) — Port St. Lucie homeowners are set to get credits on their 2026-27 trash-collection fees after the city’s $24 million settlement with former hauler Waste Pro. Most long-time owners will see a $364 credit on their tax bill, while newer residents and those who moved within the city can apply online for additional funds before the February deadline.

• One person sent to hospital after apartment fire in St. Lucie County (wpbf.com) — Firefighters rushed to Peacock Run Apartments in Port St. Lucie after smoke and flames were reported from a first-floor unit, sending one person to the hospital in stable condition. Crews rescued two pets, reviving a cat with oxygen while a bird died, and the Red Cross is helping displaced residents as investigators work to determine what sparked the blaze.

• Want to avoid Flock cameras? This website and app map routes around them (cw34.com) — If you’re driving from Port St. Lucie toward West Palm Beach and worry about license plate readers, a new app called FlockHopper shows how many cameras you’ll pass and offers longer “privacy” routes. Local tests found the camera‑avoiding option can turn a one‑hour trip into more than four, but the tool still helps you see where ALPR cameras are concentrated.
