2nd Teen Wanted In Fatal Shooting Of Sarasota 17-Year-Old Turns Self In Wednesday: Police

SARASOTA, FL — A 16-year-old Bradenton boy wanted in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old in Sarasota on Sunday turned himself in to authorities Wednesday night, Sarasota police said in a news release.

The teen faces homicide and attempted homicide charges in the deadly shooting that also injured a 16-year-old and an 9-year-old.

He’s the second teenager charged in connection with the shooting. A 16-year-old girl was arrested in Tampa on Monday and also charged with homicide and multiple counts of attempted homicide, police said.

A spokesperson for the Sarasota Police Department said the state attorney’s office will decide if the teens will be charged in the juvenile or adult system. It is Patch's policy not to identify teens in the juvenile court system.

Officers responded to reports of shots being fired in the 2200 block of Palmadelia Avenue on Sunday just before 4:30 p.m.

Three children were injured in the shooting. A 17-year-old boy was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he later died, police said.

A 16-year-old boy who was shot in the hand and a 9-year-old girl who was shot in the shoulder were also taken to SMH for their injuries, which were non-life-threatening.

There were six other children — a 7-year-old, a 10-year-old, an 11-year-old, two 13-year-olds and another 17-year-old — who were in the line of gunfire but didn’t get shot, police said.

Multiple witnesses told police that they saw two people shooting from a gold-colored car that stopped at the intersection of 22nd Street and Palmadelia Avenue.

Witnesses said one of the shooters was using a rifle from the rear driver’s side door and the other shooter was using a handgun from the driver’s seat.

Victims on the scene told police that the shooting incident was the result of an altercation between two of the victims.
