9/11 Events Planned In Sarasota, Bradenton Areas

Ceremonies and other events are planned in Sarasota and Manatee counties to commemorate the Sept. 11 attacks

SARASOTA-BRADENTON, FL — Sunday marks the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Here are some ceremonies and other events in the Sarasota and Bradenton areas commemorating the anniversary.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at USF’s Sarasota-Manatee Campus

The University of South Florida’s Sarasota-Manatee campus will pay tribute to survivors and first responders of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as well as members of the military, in a ceremony Friday at 8:15 a.m.

The ceremony starts at 8:15 a.m. at the campus’ entrance with an honor guard raising the flag.

The featured speaker is Peter Abbott, who on Sept. 11, 2001, was executive officer in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner of the New York Police Department. He later served as Sarasota’s police chief for eight years.

Manasota Remembrance Ride

This annual motorcycle ride kicks off Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Fraternal Order of Police at 3600 Circus Blvd. in Sarasota.

Tribute to Heroes Ceremony

The Manatee County Fire Chiefs Association hosts its annual 9/11 memorial tribute on Sunday, 9 a.m., at Rossi Park’s Emergency Services Memorial, 400 3rd Ave. W. in Bradenton. The event ends at the Sahib Shriners Club at Beneva Road and Circus Boulevard. The ride is free.

Sarasota County Fire Department 9/11 Commemoration

Sarasota County Fire Department staff will commemorate the lives lost on 9/11 in a ceremony on Sept. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at fire station No. 9 at 6750 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota.

Following the brief ceremony, there will be a moment of silence. Flags at all SCFD stations will be lowered to half-mast.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony in Venice

A 9/11 remembrance ceremony will be held at Patriots Park, 800 Venetia Bay Blvd., in Benice from 10 to 11 a.m. The event will include first responders with emergency vehicles, speeches and tributes, Venice police presenting the colors, Venice Fire Rescue bell ringing for those lost, Venice High School Chorus and bagpipes.
