SARASOTA, FL — A Sarasota County firefighter was hospitalized Sunday after experiencing a medical emergency while crews responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of Herndon Place, according to a Sarasota County Fire Department news release.
The department said crews were dispatched shortly before noon after reports of a structure fire. Crews arrived on scene within six minutes.
The fire was contained and remains under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal.
Crews on the scene provided medical care to the firefighter before he was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Within hours, the firefighter was in stable condition and was "awake, talking, and responding well to the excellent care" he received, the department said.
The department added, "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who responded quickly and professionally, including our Sarasota County Fire Department personnel and our partners with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office."
The agency said it's providing support to the firefighter, the firefighter's family and personnel involved in Sunday's incident.
Support is being provided through the American Red Cross for those at the home affected by the fire.
