SARASOTA, FL — In its new 2026-2027 Best Hospitals ranking, released Tuesday, U.S. News and World Report rated the top hospitals in the nation and Florida.

The publication also went one step further and named the top hospital in the Sarasota-Bradenton metro area.

The annual report, now in its 37th year, evaluated 274 hospitals in Florida. Thirty-two meet U.S. News standards and are recognized as Best Regional Hospitals.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital, which has campuses in Sarasota and Venice, ranked as the No. 1 health system in the metro area, according to U.S. News.

It was the only hospital to make the regional list and also tied for the No. 11 spot with AdventHealth Daytona Beach on the statewide ranking.

"This recognition reflects the extraordinary commitment of our physicians, nurses, staff and leaders to providing exceptional care every day," David Verinder, CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, said. "By continually investing in quality, safety and innovation, we are ensuring that people throughout our region have access to nationally recognized care close to home."

This year, U.S. News also introduced regional specialty rankings for cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; orthopedics; and rehabilitation, giving patients another way to identify highly rated care closer to home.

"SMH-Sarasota earned 17 "high performing" ratings for, among other areas, rehabilitation, cancer, cardiac, orthopedic and stroke care, while SMH-Venice earned recognition for cardiac, orthopedic and diabetes care, the hospital system said, adding, "Home to the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute, the Sarasota hospital's cancer team was spotlighted for colon, gynecologic, lung and prostate cancer surgery, as well as for the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma."
