Local businesses step up to support Tesla Solar Roof customers

Since mid-2022, Brilliant Harvest has been collaborating with Roofing by Curry on the installation of Tesla Solar Tile Roofs in our region. Roofing by Curry was approved in 2021 as a Certified Tesla Solar Tile Roof Installer. However, they needed a strong and knowledgeable electrical integration partner to interconnect the roof, inverters, electrical panels, and Tesla batteries; thus, Brilliant Harvest was Tesla and Roofing by Curry's first choice.

Since then, the collaboration has resulted in nearly 35 Solar Roof installations throughout the region. However, the thriving collaboration has ended, as on August 21, Tesla informed its network of certified third-party installers that the company's Solar Roof tiles will no longer be available to order, due to financial viability.

While customers who already have Solar Roofs installed on their homes are still being promised warranty coverage, available monitoring through the Tesla app, and integration with the Tesla Powerwall home battery, there are concerns regarding long-term availability of replacement tiles for repairs and whether third-party roofing and skilled electrical service will be available for repairs.

For Solar Roof customers in the region, Roofing by Curry and Brilliant Harvest are available for services such as system health checks, warranty support in the event of structural or operational issues, and other types of support to help keep the Solar Roof running for its intended lifespan.

"While there have been signs for the past few years that there might be trouble brewing for the Solar Roof product line, this is certainly a disappointment for those of us who went through a rigorous process to become Tesla certified, purchased specialized tools, and even reorganized our businesses to take on this type of business," said Brilliant Harvest founder and president Bill Johnson. "Our friends at Roofing by Curry and we want to reassure Solar Roof customers – even those whose systems were installed by other companies – that we are here should they run into any issues and require expert service and support."

News reports as early as 2024 noted that, while Tesla's energy storage business was doing exceedingly well, the Solar Roof appeared to be fading from the spotlight. So while not a total surprise, it is a disappointment to those who were hoping to see solar roofing thrive.

Johnson recommends that Solar Roof customers review their contracts and make written contact with Tesla's customer support team to see what they might expect in terms of parts availability and tech support in the future. Documenting these communications is key.
