Barricaded Woman Surrenders, Faces Charges In Sarasota Shooting: SPD

SARASOTA, FL - A woman faces charges after shooting a man and barricading herself in a home Wednesday evening, according to a Sarasota Police Department news release.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of N. Tamiami Trail around 5:45 p.m.
Witnesses told them that a man and a woman were near Whittaker Park, driving in two separate cars and fighting. The man was shot and taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman left the area and ran into a home in the 1100 block of Sylvan Drive, where she barricaded herself, police said. It was believed that she had weapons with her and she made threats to harm herself and others.

The Sarasota Police Department SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU), Emergency Response Team, Drone Unit, Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations Division all responded to the area. The Marine Patrol Unit responded to the water behind the home, and Air 1 from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office assisted from the air. The Sarasota County Fire Department also responded.

Members of CNU spoke with the woman and eventually convinced her to surrender peacefully, police said.

She surrendered to officers without incident just before 8 p.m. and was brought to the Sarasota County Jail.
