Bobby Jones Golf Club Hosts Tri-County 5K Event Today

One of the courses at the Bobby Jones Golf Club, 1000 Circus Boulevard, will be transformed into a high school cross country track at 4 p.m. today as Riverview High School hosts the inaugural Tri-County XC Championships with 400 runners expected to participate.

Junior Varsity and Varsity cross country teams from high schools throughout Sarasota County, Manatee County and Charlotte County will run along the British Course during the tournament. The 5K run will begin at the 10th tee with the students running on the fairway alongside the cart path.  They will finish the 3.1 mile run at the 18th hole.

The cross country course is designed for runners to enjoy the natural beauty of the British Course while protecting its integrity.

“We’re excited about hosting this event,” said Sue Martin, Bobby Jones Golf Club Manager.  “This is a unique way to introduce new people to Bobby Jones.  We’re told that potentially there could be 1,000 spectators.  So, we’ll have the opportunity to generate some revenue while introducing people to our venue. Many of them will be golfers and hopefully they’ll return with their golf clubs.”

The girls’ event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the boys will follow at 5 p.m.
