Boy Dies After Being Bitten By Family Dog: North Port Police

A 6-year-old boy died at Tampa General Hospital after being bitten by a dog at his Sarasota County home, North Port police said.

NORTH PORT, FL — A 6-year-old boy died after being bitten by a dog at his home Tuesday morning, North Port Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

The child was bitten around 10:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Badger Lane. Both the child and dog, a pit bull mix, lived in the same home, police said.

The boy was flown to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with extensive traumatic injuries, including to his upper torso. Once stabilized, he was flown to Tampa General Hospital for additional treatment. He later died there.

No charges have been filed in the case and the dog was taken from the home by Sarasota County Animal Services, which is holding the animal. Investigators aren’t aware of any previous incidents involving the animal, police said.

“Our hearts are broken for this young child and his family. As a father and pet owner, I know this is one of the worst tragedies you can imagine,” Chief Todd Garrison said. “We ask that everyone take a few moments to pay respect and reflect on those you care for in your life. Our time here is precious.”
