Hermitage Artist Retreat

“Songwriting for Character,” featuring Hermitage Fellow Rona Siddiqui, Friday, May 29, 6:30pm: Grammy Award-nominated artist, musical theater composer, and Hermitage Fellow Rona Siddiqui returns to the Hermitage Beach to reveal her approach to songwriting in this sunset program. Siddiqui has won some of musical theater’s most prestigious awards, including the Kleban Prize for lyric writing and the Jonathan Larson Grant, and has collaborated on major Broadway musicals as a music director and orchestrator, including the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning A Strange Loop, written by Hermitage Fellow Michael R. Spending 15 great years in Nashville accompanying the
Forester Sisters, who opened for Kenny Rogers, and traveling with Brenda Lee. For seven and a half years, Eddie was music director, pianist, conductor, and arranger for Engelbert Humperdinck.
You’ll hear some jazz, blues, standards, ragtime, classical, pop, calypso, and country music. People will enjoy his renditions of songs by Jimmy Buffett, Leon Russell, Ray Charles, and Johnny Cash.

Amelia Earhart was the premier female aviator of the early 20th century. During her well-publicized round-the-world flight, Earhart, along with her navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared. On July 2, 1937, they were flying over the Pacific Ocean on their way to Howland Island when they suddenly were unable to establish two-way communications or find the island. A subsequent search by the U.S. Navy found nothing. The few known details of this tragedy instantly made headlines throughout the world. Since then, their fate has remained one of history’s most debated mysteries. Over the decades, facts have been skewed to support various theories. However, a close examination of all those facts may help us understand the truth.

This historical group exhibition revisits the creative legacy of the Sarasota Colony — a vibrant and visionary community of artists who helped shape the region’s post-war cultural identity and laid the groundwork for Sarasota’s emergence as a thriving arts destination. Drawn to the Gulf Coast for its climate, light, and Ringling School of Art, these painters, printmakers, and educators established studios, taught classes, and exhibited widely, fostering a collaborative spirit that flourished between 1945 and 1965. Origins is a visual tribute to this remarkable era — highlighting the innovation, camaraderie, and enduring influence of the colony's members.
