Cold Weather Shelters Opening Christmas Weekend In Sarasota County

With temperatures dropping in the days before Christmas, Sarasota County will open cold weather shelters for those in need of a safe space.

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — With temperatures expected to drop over the Christmas weekend, Sarasota County is opening two cold weather shelters on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The Salvation Army Center of Hope, 1400 10th Street, Sarasota, will begin intake at 4:40 p.m. on these days, according to a county news release. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and breakfast will be served at 5:30 a.m.

A shelter will also open at 100 Church, 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port. Intake begins at 5 p.m. each day, the county said.

Pets should also not be left outside during the cold weather, emergency management officials said.

People who need to be outside overnight or during the early morning hours are encouraged to dress in several warm layers and limit skin exposure to the wind, the county added.

Sarasota County Fire Department officials advise using extreme caution when heating their home, as the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increase during very cold weather due to the improper use of heating devices.
