Deputy Shoots, Kills Man Who Tried To Run Him Over: Sarasota Sheriff

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — An early Tuesday morning officer-involved fatal shooting is under investigation in Sarasota County.

Patrol deputies tried to stop a vehicle in the area of Phillippi Street and South Tamiami Trail around 12:30 a.m., according to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office news release.

When the driver refused to stop, the deputies drove after him. The chase ended in the 2300 block of Webber Street, at the intersection of Lime Avenue, where the driver tried to ram a deputy with his vehicle.

In response, the deputy shot the driver, causing him to crash into the back of a home on Webber Street, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies pulled the suspect from his vehicle and, along with members of the Sarasota County Fire Department, attempted life-saving measures on him.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, SCSO said.

The deputy’s leg was injured during the incident and he was brought to a hospital for evaluation.
