Ethnic Flavor with a Big Restaurant Feel

Does the suggestion of an Argentine steakhouse sound intriguing? After all Argentina is known for its beef and red wines; so why not? Milonga, a new Argentine Steakhouse, has opened on University Avenue and we decided to check it out.

When you first arrive at Milonga Argentine Steakhouse you get the feeling of a large, chain-like restaurant. Perhaps this feeling is the result of the stand alone location in a mall area on University. Or perhaps it is due to the large, open spaced dining room and kitchen when you enter. Even though it feels like a chain restaurant, Milonga is offering Argentine cuisine in a big way.

The cuisine of Argentina is influenced by Spanish, French, Italian and German cooking and Argentina’s own food production, which is primarily beef. The menu is extensive and offers a choice of soups, salads, Argentine specialties, many different cuts of beef and an assortment of grilled items. Even the pickiest eater should find something to their liking on this menu. For our meals we chose the following:

  • Empanada Caseras de Carne: Homemade turnovers with our traditional meat filling. $5.99
Two simply plated empanadas, a savory, tasty appetizer
  •  Ensalada Cesar Salad: Crispy romaine hearts, house made croutons, and parmesan tossed in house made Cesar dressing. Small/side $3.50, Large $6.99
Cold, fresh and crunchy, a bit over dressed with fresh garlic prevailing
  •  Ensalada Completa Full Salad: Assorted greens with corn, avocado, tomatoes, black olives, julienne carrots, cucumber, dry cranberries and balsamic reduction. $10.99 Add steak $5.00.
An ample sized portion, fresh vegetables, although no carrots, sweet balsamic reduction drizzled on and you can add more oil and vinegar to taste, the steak was tender and nicely seasoned
  • Lomo: Tenderloin filet steak. 5oz petite $17.99 All steaks served with choice of starch and side vegetable.
A very flavorful and tender cut of beef.

Milonga offers a full bar service with an adequate selection of beer and wine. The wait staff is very friendly, fast, attentive and efficient.
