Invasive Insects

Learn about invading insect pests, plus a few other animals that pose a significant problem to Florida. Its attractive climate and proximity to the Caribbean make it a Mecca for pests. More than 90 percent of all the live propagated plants and animals enter the continental U.S. through the port of Miami. On average one new pest species per month becomes established in Florida. Over 1100 non-native insect species have become established in Florida. Dr. Fred Santana, Sarasota County Entomologist, will discuss a number of the more recent invasive insects and efforts being made to control them. Contact Dr. Santana for more information.
