March 20 - Media Reform Series: Not Just a Game
Media play a huge role in our lives. TV, radio, the Internet, movies, books and newspapers inform and influence our ideas, opinions, values and beliefs. They shape our understanding of the world and give us the information we need to hold our leaders accountable. From films about the commercialization of childhood and the subtle, yet widespread, effects of pornography and sexism, to titles that deal with the devastating effects of rapacious consumerism and the wars for oil that it drives, WSLR will strive with its Media Education Film Series to help spark discussion about some of the most pressing, and complicated, issues of our time. To facilitate this discussion, each film will be followed by a discussion led by area educators. Our aim is to inspire Sarasotans to think critically and in new ways about the hyper-mediated world around them.
