Florida Prepares As Tropical Storm Erika Draws Closer
The state has activated its emergency response center to Level 2 status as Erika continues west toward Florida.

Floridaās Emergency Operations Center has partially activated as current forecast models for Tropical Storm Erika show the Sunshine State ā including Tampa Bay ā within her five-day cone of error.
The center is currently operating on a Level 2 status.
Center spokesman Owen Roach explains that Level 1 is normal, everyday business. Level 2 activation means essential emergency support staffing is in place to prepare for any eventuality. Level 3, or a full activation, means āa hurricane is about to hit the state,ā Roach said.

āOur recommendation is that everyone monitor local media and find out whatās going on,ā Roach said. āI canāt stress enough, listen to the radio, get your cellphone out and ensure youāre prepared.ā
What impacts Erika may or may not have on the Tampa Bay area remain uncertain. As of Wednesday afternoon, the region was well within the stormās projected cone. With that in mind, Roach said Bay area residents should also monitor developments closely.
āI would certainly urge prudence on their part,ā he said. āHurricanes are very unpredictable.ā
Florida Department of Emergency Management Director Bryan W. Koon agrees.
āToo many variables still exist for us to be able to accurately predict where this storm might impact us or how strong it may be if it does,ā he said. āWe are preparing the protective and responsive measures we will need if the storm continues to develop.ā
Atlantic Hurricane Season runs through Nov. 30.
