SARASOTA, FL — A former Sarasota police chief has died, the Sarasota Police Department shared on Facebook.

It’s with heavy hearts we share the sad news of the passing of former Sarasota Police Chief Gordon Jolly,” the agency posted.

Jolly served as chief first from 1992 to 1996 and then again from 2000 until 2002.

He began his career with the Sarasota Police Department on April 25, 1969, retiring in 1996, the agency said.

Jolly came out of retirement for his second stint as chief.

“He was instrumental in establishing many of our specialty units today, including our downtown foot patrols,” SPD wrote.

He was also a 1980 graduate of the FBI’s prestigious National Academy training program.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, and please keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time,” the department wrote.
