Understanding Philosophy and Religion in Early China

This class is presented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art on Thursday, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. This lecture by Matthew Wells will attempt to explain how early Chinese thinkers approached the categories of philosophy and religion — absent many of the assumptions we take for granted in the modern Western world, focusing on the so-called “Three Teachings” of Confucianism, Daoism (Taoism), and Buddhism.

This annual home show runs Friday through Sunday at the Robarts Arena at the Sarasota Fairgrounds.

The quarterly Gem, Jewelry and Bead Show runs Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium.

Palm Aire Women’s Club Scholarship Luncheon

The Palm Aire Women’s Club hosts its annual scholarship luncheon Friday, 11:30 a.m., at the Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota. Scholarships will be awarded to local students. Cost is $30 for members and $35 for non-members and includes lunch.

Tom Carabasi and Latin Samba Sounds

Drummer and percussionist Tom Carabasi will perform Friday, 2 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota.

Art Talk: Visionaries Reigniting Sarasota’s Visual Arts Community

The Colony artists put Sarasota on the map as a city with a vibrant visual arts scene. Over time, though, Sarasota has become better known for other art forms such as ballet, opera, and theater. Several visual artists — Jen Palmer, Elizabeth Goodwill, Barbara Gerdeman, Craig Palmer, and Judy Levine — will discuss their work and the area’s current visual arts scene Friday, 4 to 6 p.m., at Arts Advocates Gallery.

Aleshea Harris Presents

Hear from playwright and 2021 Hermitage Greenfield Prize winner Aleshea Harris during a presentation Friday, 5:30 p.m., at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota.

Sandy Rodriguez presentation

2023 Hermitage Greenfield Prize winner Sandy Rodriguez, a visual artist, will offer a visual presentation of her work Saturday, 2 p.m., at Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood. She plans to use her commission to create a panoramic exhibition, the centerpiece of which will be a new large-scale map that depicts the southeastern topography and coastline of the U.S. marked by stories of resistance from the colonial period to the present.

Rennie Harris, Street Dance Pioneer

2023 Hermitage Greenfield Prize winner Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris will share insights into his career bringing street dance to stages all around the world Saturday, 6 p.m., at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Sarasota.

The Joy of Jazz

This event presents big band jazz by the Sarasota Jazz Project on Sunday, 2 p.m., at Centennial Park Gazebo, in Venice.

Friendly City Flea

Oscura in Bradenton hosts its monthly curated market featuring local creators, makers and small businesses Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
