How Sarasota County Voted In Florida's Presidential Primary

Find out which candidates residents of the county backed for their party's nomination.

SARASOTA, FL — Voters in Sarasota County followed yesterday’s statewide trend, backing Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for their respective Democratic and Republican nominations for president.

Here are the unofficial results from Sarasota County’s participation in the 2016 Presidential Preference Primary. All numbers are considered preliminary until certified.

Number of Registered Voters

  • Democrat – 88,348
  • Republican – 123,288
  • Other – 76,658
  • Total voters – 288,294
  • Voter turnout on March 15 – 116,170 ballots cast, 54.74 percent

The Republican Race

  • Donald Trump – 47.31 percent
  • Sen. Marco Rubio – 24.44 percent
  • Sen. Ted Cruz, 13.81 percent
  • Gov. John Kasich, 11.08 percent
  • Former Gov. Jeb Bush, 2.09 percent
  • Dr. Ben Carson, 0.71 percent

The Democratic Race

  • Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – 61.13 percent
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders, 37.26 percent
  • Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley – 1.16 percent

The primary election for all races outside the presidency is set for Aug. 30 with the last day for voters to register set for Aug. 1. The general election is Nov. 8. Voters who want their say in that election must register by Oct. 11.
