Humane Society of Sarasota County Receives $5,000 Grant from the ASPCA

SARASOTA, FL (September 20, 2013) – Through a generous grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), the Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) was able to save the precious lives of 71 dogs, 50 of which had been scheduled to be euthanized the following day because of space limitations.

“There are so many local and out-of-state shelters that are desperate to relocate their animals due to lack of space, which can mean the euthanizing of healthy or treatable animals,” remarked Kristi Dorman, Executive Director of HSSC. “We are so thankful for the support of the ASPCA for providing this generous grant, which will go a long way in helping HSSC to save more lives.”

“The simple act of moving a dog from a shelter with high supply and no demand, to a shelter that has a waiting list of people looking for dogs of a certain breed can save countless lives,” said Kristen Limbert, Director of Animal Relocation at the ASPCA. “We are pleased to provide this grant to HSSC so that they can continue to provide this critical service.”

The ASPCA recently awarded a $5,000 grant to help fund the transportation costs incurred to relocate dogs from overcrowded shelters to rescues that have space and high consumer demand.  As a result of this grant and HSSC’s partnership with Loving Friends Transport, Calcasieu Parish Animal Shelter and St. Martin Parish, all 71 dogs rescued will find loving, forever homes.

The rescued dogs will be available in the coming days.  Each will undergo a comprehensive medical exam, receive any necessary medical treatment and will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, de-wormed and vaccinated.
