Man Hit By Plane Wrote 1 Last Love Letter

The declaration was posted to his Facebook page the day he died.

Just hours before he was struck and killed by a plane that crashed on a Venice beach Sunday, Ommy Irizarry used his Facebook account to proclaim his love for his wife, Rebecca.

“Today, 9 years ago, I tied my life to my beautiful wife, Rebecca Irizarry,” Ommy, 36, wrote on his Facebook page. “I am very happy and can’t wait to see what the next 100 have in store for us.”

Shortly after making that post, Ommy and his daughter Oceana, 9, were struck by a 1972 Piper Cherokee, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Ommy died at the scene while Oceana died Tuesday at All Children’s Hospital.

Karl Kokomoor, 57, let the Venice Airport know his plane was in trouble and said he was going to try and bring it in on Caspersen Beach in Venice. Kokomoor and his passenger, David Theen, 60, both of Englewood escaped injury in the crash.

The Irizarry family wasn’t so lucky.

While the crash remains under investigation, aviation experts told the Tampa Bay Times it’s quite possible Ommy and Oceana did not hear the plane as it glided onto the beach. Kokomoor may have been so focused on landing he didn’t see the people on the beach, Pilot Country Airport’s Rex Myers told the Times.

Ommy Irizarry is a native of Puerto Rico and was a Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army. He and his family were in Florida on vacation. The couple was celebrating their ninth anniversary.

“I love you, Becci,” was the last line of Ommy’s final Facebook post.
