Man Tries To Sell WWI Anti-Ship Round, Shuts Down U.S. 41: Police

A portion of U.S. 41 in North Port was shut down after a man tried to sell a World War I anti-ship round to a pawn shop, police said.

NORTH PORT, FL — A portion of U.S. 41 was shut down Tuesday afternoon when a man tried to sell a World War I anti-ship personnel round that had never been fired to a pawn shop, the North Port Police Department shared on its Facebook page.

Police responded to reports of a suspicious item in the area of U.S. 41 and Eager Avenue around 3 p.m.

Investigators learned that the man had tried to sell the device to a nearby pawn shop. A staff member at the store told him that it “could be dangerous” and the man called police, NPPD said.

Explosive experts with NPPD, the Sarasota Police Department and MacDill Air Force base responded and took the round into their possession without incident.
