Man in Wheelchair Killed in Hit-And-Run Crash

The Sarasota Police Department is looking for help identifying the motorist involved in a fatal Tuesday night hit-and-run crash.

The accident occurred around 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and U.S. 301. Police say Michael Wright, 48, was crossing the intersection in his wheelchair, in the crosswalk, when he was struck by a vehicle.

No witnesses have come forward, so officers have little information in the case, an email to media stated.

Wright was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but died Wednesday morning, police said.

“There is a red light camera at the intersection of 17th Street and U.S. 301,” police noted in the email. “Officers are working to retrieve that video from the red light camera company however it could take several weeks.”
