The Publix scam isn’t the only one reported in recent weeks. Sarasota Police, for example, warned earlier this week of phony $100 bills that have been circulating in that community.

Last month, the state of Florida also warned residents about an uptick in vacation scams.

“Consumers should always be cautious when receiving unsolicited phone calls or emails saying that they’ve won a ‘special promotion’ or ‘free luxury vacation,’ ” Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam said in a statement announcing the uptick. “An educated consumer is the best defense against fraud and deception, and I encourage consumers to accesses our tips and resources at FreshFromFlorida.com.”

Last week, Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies announced the arrest of a Largo woman. She was charged with seven counts of grand theft after deputies say she sold phony cruises to clients.
