SARASOTA, FL — An officer-involved shooting during a Monday morning traffic stop near New College is under investigation, according to a Sarasota Police Department news release.

The officer initiated the traffic stop on a suspect's vehicle with a Sarasota County warrant near the intersection of U.S. 41 and University Parkway just before 8 a.m.

While trying to get the driver into custody, the officer-involved shooting took place, police said.

The active crime scene affected traffic near the airport for several hours Monday.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
