Phoenix Academy Has New Leader

Riverview assistant principal Harriet Moore has been chosen to replace Rachel Shelley at the head of the Phoenix Academy. Shelley is now the principal at Booker High.

Harriet Moore, an assistant principal at Riverview High School, has been named program director of Phoenix Academy. The appointment is expected to be approved by the School Board of Sarasota County at its regular board meeting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, and to become effective Friday, July 1.  

Moore will succeed current principal Rachel Shelley, who has been named the next .

Phoenix Academy serves students in grades eight-10 who are struggling academically by helping them focus on their studies so they will be successful when they return to a traditional high school setting.

“Dr. Moore is perfect for Phoenix Academy because of her educational experience and empathy for students with a variety of backgrounds and needs,” said Steve Cantees, the district’s executive director of high schools. “As Dr. Shelley starts a new chapter of her career as principal of Booker High, we welcome Dr. Moore as the next great leader of Phoenix Academy.”   

Moore said, “I am excited about the opportunity to work with the staff, parents and students of Phoenix Academy. Under the outstanding leadership of Dr. Rachel Shelley, Phoenix students have made great academic strides. It is my intention to continue in this tradition of excellence.”
