Sarasota County Schools Receive 'A' from State

Six of the seven district traditional middle schools were rated as A schools; Booker Middle rose from a C to a B.

The Sarasota County School District earned an A grade for the 2010-2011 school year, according to results released today by the Florida Department of Education. Including traditional and charter schools, 97 percent of all district elementary and middle schools received an A or B for the 2010-11 school year.

“We are pleased that the majority of our elementary and middle schools are A or B schools, even with the tougher standards of FCAT 2.0,” said Superintendent Lori White. “Our teachers and administrators are dedicated to working to ensure that every student is learning and working to reach his or her highest potential.”

Eighteen of 23 traditional elementary schools were assigned an A grade. Three elementary schools, all in North Port, received higher grades compared to last year: Atwater rose from a C to an A, Glenallen and Toledo Blade each went from a B to an A. Three elementary schools dropped from to B from an A: in Sarasota, Englewood, and Lamarque in North Port.

School grades for most high schools and some schools that combine more than one level (such as middle and high school grades) are pending until the new high school accountability component is calculated. Fifty percent of a high school’s grade will be based on the FCAT component and 50 percent will be based on new components, including graduation rate, participation and performance in advanced courses and college readiness. High school grades are expected later this year.
