Sarasota Heat Claim the USSSA Super Sunday Sizzler Championship
On Feb. 6 the 10-under girls softball team won four games to claim the title.
The Sarasota Heat 10-under softball team won four games on Feb. 6 en route to claiming the USSSA Super Sunday Sizzler championship at the Miss Sarasota Softball complex.
The Heat knocked off the North Port Crossfire and the Naples Sun Devils by scores of 9-7 and 18-0, respectively, in the seeding round. The two victories propelled the Heat to the top seed for the single-elimination portion of the tournament.
Playing the fourth-seeded Naples Sun Devils in the semifinals, the Heat registered a 15-5 victory. In the championship game, the Heat recorded an 8-5 win over the Sun Coast Storm.
The tournament's most valuable player, Kelsey Hill, was the winning pitcher in three of the Heat’s four games. Angelyn Sherry, who made a relief appearance in the tournament opener, got the start and picked up the win in the Heat’s semifinal game.
Game Recaps
Taylor Sawyer paced the Heat offensively in the first tournament game with two hits and two runs scored. Aleacia Anges had a hit and scored twice for the Heat in the first game.
Sawyer, MacKenzie Everhart, Kacey Garrison, Hill and Lexi Hemmersbach each scored two runs in the 18-0 seeding-round win over the Naples Sun Devils. All 11 of the Heat players seeing action in the game scored at least one run.
In the 15-5 win over the Naples Sun Devils that sent the Heat to the championship game, Chloe Ewing, Anges, Mohamed, Sawyer, Everhart and Garrison each scored two runs.
The Heat scored seven runs in the first inning of their championship game victory over the Sun Coast Storm. Mohamed scored two of her team’s eight runs.
