Sarasota Pineapple Drop 2015: What You Need to Know

The celebration gets under way at 2 p.m. Thursday.

SARASOTA, FL — Tampa Bay area residents looking for a way to ring in the New Year might want to check out Sarasota’s Pineapple Drop.

The annual celebration gets under way at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, with games for the kids and plenty of midway fun courtesy of the State Street Fair. Dancing in the streets starts at 3 p.m. with the lighted pineapple dropping at the corner of Lemon Avenue and Main Street at midnight.

Here are a few things folks need to know before they go:

Location

The event takes place in downtown Sarasota along Lemon Avenue and Main Street. The midway will go up along State Street for family entertainment while food vendors will be set up around the party area, as well.

Musical Acts

DJ’s take over the 5 Points Stage at 8 p.m.

Big Night Out plays on the north stage on Lemon Avenue at 9 p.m.

Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones are set to play on the east stage near the circle at Orange Avenue at 9 p.m.

Cost

The event is free, but food, drinks and rides at the fair will come at a price.

Street Closings

A number of streets will be closed for the event, including portions of Lemon Avenue, State Street, Main Street and First Street. Pay attention to signs to avoid towing.

What No To Bring

A few items are not allowed in the event area, including coolers, backpacks and outside alcohol.
