Sol Meyer NY Delicatessen Coming to Sarasota

The new eatery is expected to open in mid-November.

Sarasota area residents who salivate over flavors only found in a New York delicatessen will have a new place to satisfy their tastes starting next month.

Sol Meyer NY Delicatessen intends to open its doors on Main Street soon, bringing hungry customers such options as pastrami on rye, matzah ball soup, knishes and even good, old-fashion egg creams. The dream of two brothers-in-law, Dr. Meyer Rubin Samotin and Solomon Shenker, the eatery will serve up all the standard fare commonly found in New York City.

“The deli will offer house made brisket, blintzes, soups, smoked fish, bagels, hot pastrami sandwiches, noodle kugel knishes and Chef Sol’s award-winning cheesecakes, chocolate babkas and rugelach,” an announcement on the opening stated. “Guests don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy a real New York Deli experience, they just have to love food.”

Samotin is a doctor and musician. His brother-in-law Shenker happens to be an award-winning chef.

While the two actually grew up about 100 miles apart in New York, they didn’t meet until years later in Florida. The pair instantly hit it off, quickly discovering how many dreams they shared, including a desire to bring traditional New York flavors to Sarasota.

“We are here to present to you the food of our youth, a delicious unique cuisine that embraces the best of European and American fusion,” the two said.

The pair promise all dishes served up will be homemade and handmade. In addition, they say menu items will contain local products whenever possible.

Sol Meyer is located at 1473 Main St. While an official opening date has not yet been set, the two say mid-November is the target. In the meantime, the deli will start accepting orders for Thanksgiving side dishes and pumpkin cheesecakes starting the first week of November.
