Temple Emanu-El is delighted to announce that, in an effort to better serve the temple’s fast-growing congregation, Rabbis Elaine Rose Glickman and Mimi Weisel have officially been hired as Adjunct Rabbis. With a longtime presence and deep connections at Temple Emanu-El, both rabbis already know and love the congregation and have earned the affection and trust of temple leaders and members.

“I am thrilled that two of our members have been elevated to the formal position of Adjunct Rabbis,” said Temple Emanu-El President Denise Cotler. “Rabbis Glickman and Weisel are admired and respected for their inspiration, warmth, scholarly Jewish knowledge and contributions to our temple and wider Sarasota community.”

Rabbi Weisel – the mother of Temple Emanu-El Associate Rabbi, Michael Shefrin – began her professional career administering development programs in the aerospace industry. Ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1998, she also earned a BA in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as additional credentials and certificates.

In her rabbinic career, she served as a Hospice Spiritual Care Counselor/Chaplain and Bereavement Counselor in Northern California, Rabbi-in-Residence at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco, Assistant Dean at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, and Director of Jewish Education and Continuity at the Dave & Mary Alper Jewish Community Center in Miami. After retiring from full-time rabbinic duties, she moved from California to Sarasota to be with her son, Rabbi Shefrin, and his family. She is privileged to continue to utilize her skills and passions to benefit the temple, teaching and providing spiritual and pastoral care.

Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman – the wife of Senior Rabbi Brenner Glickman and proud mother of three now-adult children who grew up at the temple – received her Master of Arts and ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she earned prizes for writing and academic excellence and graduated first in her class. A past editor-in-chief of the CCAR Journal: The Reform Jewish Quarterly and creator of the popular blog “The Streets of Jerusalem” for the Jerusalem Post, she has written, edited, and contributed to a dozen books, including the National Jewish Book Award finalist "Sacred Parenting,” “The Messiah and the Jews,” “Living Torah,” and the “Encyclopedia of Antisemitism." Her essays on Israel and the hostages of October 7, gun violence, sexual assault, and the plight of Iranian women have been published in local and national newspapers.

In 2022, Rabbi Glickman received the “Hakarat Hatov” award for her service to the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and she was named a “Woman in Power” by the National Council of Jewish Women in 2024. She is a past president of the Sarasota-Manatee Rabbinic Association; an executive board member of the West Florida chapter of the Jewish National Fund; a past board member of All Faiths Food Bank, Hershorin-Schiff Community Day School, and ALSO Youth; and an Affiliated Professor at the University of Haifa.

Both Adjunct Rabbis will maintain an active role in worship services as well as the everyday life and activities of Temple Emanu-El.

“We are thrilled to be able to enhance our fantastic rabbinical team with the addition of Adjunct Rabbis Weisel and Glickman,” said Executive Director Christine Elliott. “Already beloved members of our temple family and community, they will help to reduce the monumental workload of our Senior and Associate Rabbis while laying the foundation for expanded services and programming in the future.”
