SCAT Trolley Hits, Kills Bicyclist In Siesta Key Monday: FHP

SARASOTA, FL — A 74-year-old man riding a bike was killed Monday afternoon in a Siesta Key crash involving a trolley operated by Sarasota County Area Transit, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Both the bicyclist and the trolley were traveling southbound on Midnight Pass Road at Stickney Point Road around 1:30 p.m.

The bicyclist turned in front of the trolley as they entered the intersection, violating the trolley driver’s right-of-way, FHP said. The cyclist was thrown from his bike and pronounced dead on the scene by Sarasota County EMS.

FHP has not released the name of the bicyclist or the trolley driver, a 42-year-old woman.

All lanes of Midnight Pass Road were temporarily closed Monday afternoon, but reopened around 4:50 p.m., the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.

FHP’s Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate.
