Turn In Unwanted Guns At Saturday Event: Sarasota Police Department

The Sarasota Police Department is accepting unwanted guns at Saturday's "Done with the Gun" turn-in event.

SARASOTA, FL — Community members looking for a way to safely dispose of unwanted firearms can turn them in Saturday during the Sarasota Police Department’s “Done with the Gun” event.

Anyone can turn in their unwanted guns from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sarasota Police Headquarters, 2099 Adams Lane, or the Sarasota Police Substation, 1782 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to a Sarasota Police Department news release.

Officers will also give away free gun locks during the event so citizens can keep their firearms secure.

When turning in guns, they must be unloaded with the safety engaged, and be inside a bag, box, holster, or case in the trunk or back of a vehicle, police said.

Officers will accept non-working, antique, replica, pellet or BB guns, as well as ammunition. When you arrive at a drop-off location, the firearm should be in your vehicle and an officer will retrieve it.

“We’re committed to keeping the City of Sarasota safe,” Chief Rex Troche said. “Part of that commitment is keeping unsecured and unwanted firearms out of the hands of children and possible criminals. Suppose a citizen no longer wants a firearm. In that case, this turn-in event allows them to responsibly dispose of the firearm and ammunition responsibly, thereby eliminating the risk of theft, misuse or accidental discharge.”
