Venice Postmaster Bit Girl, Attacked Woman In Port Charlotte: Sheriff

The Venice postmaster faces charges after attacking a woman and girl in Port Charlotte, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said.

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL — A Port Charlotte man was charged after biting a girl and attacking a woman in an April 12 incident in Charlotte County, authorities said.

Kevin Sullivan, 46, was charged with battery by intentional touch or strike and willfully abusing a child without causing great bodily harm, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

Sullivan is the current postmaster in Venice, according to ABC 7. Both victims’ names are protected under Marsy’s Law.

On April 12, Sullivan picked up one of the victims and a witness early from school and took them to Buffalo Wild Wings. The girl noticed he wasn’t wearing his wedding ring and told the second victim, a woman who joined them at the restaurant, according to the affidavit obtained by Patch.

The woman told Sullivan, who was drinking at the restaurant, that she was hurt that he was not wearing his ring, the deputy wrote. He was also angry with the girl for telling the woman about the ring.

Once they arrived home, he and the woman argued because he wanted to go to Hooters. Both victims told Sullivan he should stay home, deputies wrote.

Sullivan left the home anyway, hitting the woman's car, which they own together. The victims and witness followed him to Hooters, according to the affidavit.

After returning home from the restaurant, Sullivan wanted to leave again. Both victims begged him to stay home, authorities said, and the girl threw Sullivan’s keys to his truck in the bushes to hide them from him.

The girl also accused Sullivan of shoving the woman and pulling her hair. The girl told deputies Sullivan also pinned the woman to the ground near the front door, grabbing her by the neck, until she hit him.

They told deputies he then followed both victims into the kitchen, demanding his keys. Sullivan hit the woman in the face and pushed her onto the couch, according to the affidavit. He got on top of her, hitting her as she tried to get away. He then "went after" the girl, who told the witness to call local law enforcement.

After deputies arrived, Sullivan told them the woman “was only upset because they are having marital issues.”

He also claimed she used force first, pushing him and grabbing him.

The witness at the scene recorded the incident from the time they returned from Hooters to when he called law enforcement and shared the video with the sheriff’s office.

After reviewing the video, deputies said, “the first action of aggression was when (Sullivan) grabbed (the woman) at the back of the neck, pushing her down onto her knees.”

The video also showed him grab, twist and bite the girl's arm, and later grab the woman, punch her, and pull her to the ground by her hair, deputies wrote.
